Day 2 — The Big Day Out (Mostly Free)
This is the day that makes the whole weekend worth it, and it costs almost nothing. Start with the cliff-top walk at Ponta da Piedade — a boardwalk along the golden cliffs with the sea crashing below. It's free, it's spectacular, and the kids treated it like an adventure trail, counting the arches and caves as we went.
Then the one paid highlight: a boat trip into the Benagil caves. It's the single ticket we buy on the whole trip, and it's worth it — the sea cave with the hole in the roof is the image everyone knows, and seeing it from the water is genuinely different. A family ticket runs about €60. Book the morning slot; the afternoon boats queue.
Afternoon back at the beach, then a wander through Lagos's old town — the cobbled streets, the fortress walls, the little market. Free, and the kids remember the ice cream more than the caves. Night two in the same hotel, so we never repack.

One last beach morning, a proper pastel de nata each from the bakery, and the late-afternoon flight home. The trick is to book the last flight of the day so you get a full third day instead of a rushed one — it's the same price, but you feel like you've had three days, not two and a half. What we'd skip next time: the tourist-trap "sunset cruise" that costs €40 a head and shows you the same cliffs you can walk for free.
What My Kids Actually Remember
Not the caves. Not the "amazing" cliffs. My daughter remembers the stray dog that followed us along the Ponta da Piedade boardwalk for twenty minutes.
